There have been many examples of engineering throughout history, ranging from ancient monuments all the way to modern technology. Imhotep is the one who built the Saqqara step-pyramid. This was according to ancient Egyptians. Imhotep's step-pyramid was built in the third millennium BC. After his death, the Egyptians honored him with a deification. You may have heard about this ancient Egyptian engineer. But did it surprise you that he was also a god deified?

Ancient engineering monuments

Many monuments of ancient engineering are evidence of the human abilities. The ancient Egyptian civil engineers are reflected in the pyramids, ziggurats, and Pharos at Alexandria. Acropolis and cities in the Indus Valley civilization are other examples of engineering monuments. The Colosseum as well as the Acropolis were created by Roman and Ancient Greek engineers. Mayan civil engineers created impressive structures like the aqueducts and drainage systems at Teotihuacan in Mexico. The Turkish engineering monument, Al-Jazari, was constructed with five water pumping machines for the kings of the Artuqid dynasty. Others engineers like Mechanics developed the concepts for gears, escapement mechanism, and more.

The origins of mechanical engineers date back to Mesopotamia's 5th-millennium BC. The field has expanded greatly over the years, encompassing everything from automobiles to energy conversion to microelectromechanical systems. History of mechanical engineering shows that it wasn't always as simple as it is today. It doesn't matter whether you are interested manufacturing equipment, automobiles or energy conversion; mechanical engineering has influenced many aspects in our lives.

The beginning of electrical engineering

After World War I ended, the relationship between engineers and government became more complicated. While radio was used to communicate during the war, it required strict government regulation. The United States government took over control of all wireless radio stations in 1917. It claimed that the radio spectrum was too precious to be left uncontrolled. It was the beginning of a boom in technology, which changed how we communicate. You can now see the history of electricity in New York City, and other places.

Radio technology as it was developed in the early years

In the early 1900s, radios were used for simplex communications. Morse Code is a code similar to that used for writing and used to send messages. These communications were one-way, and it was impossible to speak over them. Despite limitations in early radios, the idea to send electrical waves over vast distances was groundbreaking. The invention of long-distance telephone lines would not be possible until a new technology was created.


Early electric generators

The early electric generator was a marvel of engineering that made it possible to produce electrical power with a small amount of work. Hydroelectric power was first explored in the Sierra Nevada hydraulic mines during the 1880s. In 1893, Almarian Decker, a former engineer of the Brush arc light company who had moved to California because of tuberculosis, integrated generation and transmission in the first three-phase alternate-current power plant in Redlands.

The 19th century is the beginning of electrical engineering's history. Alexander Graham Bell (and Thomas Edison) were the two most influential people in the sector at this time. These two men became the first to specialize as engineers in electricity, and electricity spread quickly. The rise of the electrical industry changed the world and government became a large employer of electrical engineers. While the TVA was most notable of all the government initiatives in this sector, local governments also provided power and services.

The School of Engineering at Santa Clara University was founded in 1912, and started offering bachelor's degrees. The school later expanded its offerings to include master's and doctoral programs. Today, the school serves the entire Silicon Valley area. It offers an extensive range of programs in engineering including advanced degree programs. There are also many opportunities to network and continue education. It is the only national organization that is exclusively dedicated to electrical engineering.

Electrical engineering was born in England. Many of the pioneers in the field, including George Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel came from the UK. The first demonstration of electrical energy being converted to mechanical energy was made by Michael Faraday in 1821. This helped cement the field. The UK had many other key contributors to the field's development, in addition to these pioneers.

While electricity isn't a new technology in itself, it was deemed necessary for many jurisdictions. Governments began to assume responsibility for providing power and communication to its citizens and became major employers of electrical engineers. While the TVA is most prominent government initiative in this space, there were also other examples. Government control over power and communications was the norm in the USA. Because of this technological advancement, electrical engineers started to recognize the importance in advancing their fields.

How to Use an Engineering Ruler

An engineering ruler is a tool that engineers use to measure distances. Since ancient times, engineers have measured distances. Around 3000 BC, the world's first measured device was developed.

Although rulers have been around for a long time, they are now much more common in modern times. The most widely used type of ruler is the metric ruler. These rulers are marked off in millimeters (1 mm 0.039 inches). Most rulers in metric are rectangular in shape, and can be purchased in many sizes. There are also millimeters and centimeters on some rulers. For example, 1 cm equals 2.54 mm.
